Care Instructions

The Ficus tree is a tropical plant and can be kept inside, but requires full sun or placed under a grow light. During the summer months, you can place it outside in full sun. When temperatures drop below 60° F the tree should be taken inside.

Ficus can tolerate low humidity for a short period of time, due to its thick waxy leaves, but they do require higher humidity. In extremely higher humidity it will develop aerial roots. Water generously once soil gets dry. The tree can tolerate occasional over or under watering but will stress if neglected for too long. Misting is fine in moderation as this to can be harmful if done excessively and will make it susceptible to fungal and pests.

Apply slow release solid organic fertilizer once a month or use a liquid fertilizer every week during the growing season and every two weeks during the winter.

Regular pruning of leaves and dead flowers is necessary to retain its shape and health. Prune back to 2 leaves after the 6-8 leaves have grown. Removing bigger leaves, will reduce leaf size.

In unfavorable conditions the tree is susceptible to spider mites, scale and whiteflies. You can use insecticide sprays, but to avoid infestations, it is important to provide plenty of light and the right amount of moisture. When trimming be careful to not leave any open wounds as this can cause fungal disease that can kill a single branch or the entire tree if not treated. Use cut paste to mend any open wounds.
